Open Source Africa

Background

While many non-profit organisations in Southern Africa are aware of Open Source and low-cost ICTs as ideas, few are aware of the practical opportunities and benefits they provide for their organisation. Even fewer are aware of how to go about assessing these opportunities and benefits within their specific context. A clearer understanding and awareness is needed about Open Source implementation and low-cost ICTs on the ground.

Project Synopsis:

Open Source Africa is an online information resource and network focusing on Open Source technology in practice. It aims to demystify Open Source for the non-profit community in Southern Africa, collating information around Open Source and low-cost ICTs, while providing easy-to-understand technical advice for people working in the field.

Open Research has been contracted to develop the pilot phase of the portal for the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA).
